Wheelchair ice skating? Really? is usually the response when you tell people what happened on an ECHO trip to Telford.
Always up for a challenge, ECHO project leader, Lucy Tisdale, decided to help a group of wheelchair users to experience ice skating for the first time. Telford ice rink was picked as the venue, suitable transport lined up then came the task of writing the risk assessment. What could possibly go wrong having wheelchair uses on ice? Actually it turns out that it is far safer and far more much fun than you imagine. So much so that there has already been a return visit by the group and requests to go again. And there were no shortage of volunteer helpers either.
This is the kind of adventure that ECHO makes happen for the people that it supports and in sharing the event we hope that it might just change a few minds about what is possible too.
